Episode 100!
I don’t really produce plays. There are many other organizations that are wonderful at producing plays, and I’m not interested in someone coming in that’s completely done and all they’re really looking for is financial support. I don’t work like that. What most excites me is when I meet with an artist who would love to do a site-specific piece, and in whatever form it might take whether it be outdoors or indoors, in a car, in an elevator, on a roof or wherever it could be. They see a necessity for why En Garde and no one else.
I founded En Garde Arts in 1986, pioneering the site-specific theater movement in New York City. We transform urban landscapes into stages. For decades, I’ve championed groundbreaking artists and reimagined where theater can happen, and who it is for.

Anne Hamburger (she/her) Founded En Garde Arts in 1985. As its Executive Artistic Director, she is responsible for pioneering site-specific theatre in New York, using its streets and historic landmarks as her stage.

Hamburger has produced the work of artists that are now internationally renowned: Anne Bogart, Charles L. Mee, Tina Landau, Jonathan Larson and Reza Abdoh, with large-scale predominantly outdoor work. As its Executive Artistic Director, her leadership model is highly collaborative and anti-hierarchical while leading the creative and strategic vision of the company. She is committed to nurturing a new generation of theatrical risk-takers, encouraging artists to explore and rigorously experiment with their creative practice. The relationship with artists extends beyond the stage—offering mentorship, friendship, and a commitment to their creative and personal growth. For her work, Hamburger has won 6 Obie Awards, 2 Drama Desk Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, Lee Reynolds Award and the Exceptional Merit in Media Award from The National Political Women’s Caucus. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama and is the proud mother of two children Hannah and Owen Jenney.
We’re thrilled to announce exciting news! La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, in association with MART and En Garde Arts, presents the new contemporary play “Seagull: True Story” directed by Alexander Molochnikov, written by Eli Rarey.
La Mama
May 16th — June 1st
“We’ve been working on this play for three years—since the war in Ukraine began, forcing me and many artists to leave my homeland, where I once created freely. With the war came censorship, and that is the heart of our meta-theatrical show: how can we create art today without fear?”—Alexander Molochnikov
Featuring a stellar cast, including OUR CLASS stars Andrey Burkovskiy @aburkovskiy and Elan Zafir @elanzafir, this production brings together an international creative team striving to stage a story about staging the Seagull that, as Chekhov envisioned, “flies freely from the soul” in today’s chaotic world. “Seagull: True Story” is about love, betrayal and the struggle for free artistic expression in a world overshadowed by fear.
Executive producer: Sofia Kapkova.
