Frances McGarry

FRANCES McGARRY, Ph.D. has been teaching theater and English for more than twenty-five years.  In 1993, she was the recipient of the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (AATE) John C. Barner Theatre Teacher of the Year Award in recognition of a theatre program she authored and developed.  In her search to select new plays for her Theatreworks program, Frances became acquainted with the Young Playwrights Festival in New York City which eventually became the subject of her doctoral dissertation in the Program of Educational Theater at New York University.
McGarry has served as an adjunct professor in The Program of Educational Theatre at NYU and the Department of Theatre at CUNY/Brooklyn College. She has been a guest artist at SUNY Stony Brook and The City College of the City University of New York (CUNY). In 2007 she was selected for the first AATE Theatre Leadership Institute.
As The Creative Arts Team (CAT)/City University of New York NYC Wolf Trap/Early Learning through the Arts Program Director of Early Learning Through the Arts in collaboration with a team of Master Teaching Artists created The Tale of Tancho, a conflict resolution play on bullying for three and four-year-olds.  As Director of Instruction and Education Consultant for Young Playwrights Inc. since 2007 she has presented the Write A Play! Curriculum at local, regional, and national conferences including New York City Arts in Education Roundtable Face to Face, New York State English Council, the Southeast Center for Education in the Arts, American Association of Theater Educators/Association for Theater in Higher Education, North Carolina Theatre Arts Educators Teacher Training Institute, New York State Alliance for Arts Education Common Ground Conference, New York State Theatre Educators Association, Long Island Language Arts Council, BOCES Literacy & Learning Institute.
